SHERO is a series of 12 six word stories that were featured in the 2018 Rising Stars exhibition at New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. The series is a commentary on the vulnerabilities of the "Strong Black Woman" and how those characteristics are direct counterparts to the very strengths cultivated in generations of women from the past as a means of survival.

SHERO
by Chazney Thomas

Fallacious badges of honor worn proudly.
Facades of fortitude create inauthentic lives.
Inhibiting the desire to simply be.
Strength to the point of destruction.
Strength to the point of neglect.
Strength that deprives one of power.
Invincible. Indestructible. Infallible. Fragility doesn’t exist.
No time to feel. What heart?
Not time to heal. What scars?
No time to grieve. What tears?
No time to scream. Who hears?
Truth hides, confined in her soul.
